It is said and believed that while technology cannot replace humans, technology in the right hands holds the potential to bring about a significant transformation in the landscape of a nation. This stands true when it comes to digitalization in the educational sector in India. This phenomenon empowered teachers with one of the most powerful tools that could ever have been invented - Screens.

Screens that took the entire nation through a journey of education, and knowledge and tapped into the potential of the rarest nooks and corners of the digital educational landscape of the country on the whole. From traditional classrooms to paving the way for screens and tabs, and then to a symbiotic environment where both exist together - we have come a long way. The pandemic was highly instrumental to this shift. Each click through the screens during the lockdown enabled an entirely new world of boundless knowledge and endless horizons that held the educational system together through tough times.

Government Initiatives - A Leap into Digital Learning

However, it must be noted that this journey had commenced long before the pandemic hit. The backend journey to this world had already begun on the 1st of July, 2015 when respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the onset of a Digital India. For the educational sector specifically, the largest leap was taken on May 17, 2020, when the government introduced a significant initiative called PM eVidya. The goal of this was to bring together all digital, online, and on-air education efforts, ensuring equal access for nearly 25 crore school-going children nationwide. At the forefront of this initiative is DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing), a vital project by MHRD facilitating accessible and widespread learning. Launched in 2017, Diksha today stands as one nation and one digital platform for students all across India

This progress did not end here. The introduction of VidyaDaan in April 2020 marked yet another milestone. This was a national-level content contribution program that was built to utilize the Diksha platform. This program encourages experts, private entities, and educational bodies to donate e-learning resources for school education.

When we say digital, we do not just mean internet connectivity and mobile screens - One of the prominent initiatives by the government to propagate education for all was Swayam Prabha TV whose channels serve as an educational lifeline for those without direct access to education. These channels broadcast high-quality educational programs across 32 channels, catering to both higher education and school education. In collaboration with private DTH operators like Tata Sky and Airtel, the Department of School Education and Literacy extends the reach of educational content. This transformation aims to facilitate usage for each individual at their own time and convenience, allowing learners to access content anytime, anywhere, and organize it by chapter and topics on Diksha for enhanced learning experiences.

Connectivity and Digital Inclusion

The government is progressing to a conducive environment where education is provided by all, for all, and for all. Teachers, schools, and classrooms have expanded to the internet, screens, and connectivity. When we mention the phrase, ‘for all’, let’s not forget that we are addressing a nation that is majorly populated with rural areas, and that has always stood as one of the biggest challenges for all sectors. Where there is the struggle for basic farming equipment, it has undoubtedly been a challenge to reach the younger generation with connectivity. A significant hurdle, especially in rural areas, was thus, providing quality education. The journey towards progress and reaching a stage where we bridge the gap between education and population has been a ride to remember - but we are still on it. A recent study has suggested that by the end of 2025, the internet penetration rate in India will be above 55%, with one of the top priorities for the government in India being the digitization of education. Thanks to affordable smartphones and widespread internet access, digitization has been consistently seeping through our economy. Now, even in remote areas, residents can access top-notch education without relocating. This shift minimizes the educational gap, opening doors for more students to achieve higher academic outcomes.

This shift has equally enhanced the urban areas of India. Smart classrooms post-covid brought in a new era, shaping a new learning experience altogether. Like other industries, India's education system has come to be increasingly relying on ed-tech platforms for seamless learning. This shift is not limited to just private institutions but even government schools are recognizing its value. While there's room for improvement in the quality of education in government schools, technology emerges as a key facilitator. The government's focus on accessibility, academic excellence, user-friendly learning methods, language skills enhancement, a student-centric approach, and increased classroom engagement is evident in its focus on digitalization through ed-tech platforms at various levels all across.

Beginning of a New Era

During the global struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-21, Digital Education emerged as the primary mode of learning in India. This change proved instrumental in imparting practical and technical wisdom to students despite the lockdown. While several service-based industries were collapsing amidst the pandemic, the educational system was one industry in India that was held together boundlessly due to digitalization.

The beauty of digital learning lies in its unrestricted access, liberating students from the confinement of a specific location or time. Whether engaging in online classes or self-paced learning, students have the flexibility to choose when and where they study. The availability of study material online allows learners to grasp concepts at their own pace, bringing about a deeper understanding of each topic.

A new era is dawning in India's education system, marked by the transformative force of digitalization. This phase witnesses educational institutions wholeheartedly welcoming the concept of digital learning, thus reshaping the entire framework of education. The shift is evident in the facilitation of teaching and learning through responsive resources, user-friendly modules, self-learning methodologies, and interactive sessions.

The Way Forward

As we look ahead on this journey, the government is said to be prepared to focus on readying students for the industry by evaluating their skills and helping them align with industry-specific needs. To achieve this, there has been a push for the Indian education system to shift from traditional to digital methods.
